We take the results documented by independent antivirus testing labs really seriously. The simple truth that a specific vendor’s product shows up in the results is a vote of confidence, of sorts. It means the lab believed that the product significant, and the seller felt the expense of testing was rewarding. Of course, getting good scores from the tests is also significant.
We Evaluate Malware, Spyware, and Adware Defenses
We also subject every product to our hands-on evaluation of malware protection, as a way to get a sense of how the product functions. According to how thoroughly the thing prevents malware setup, it might earn up to ten points for malware security.
Our malware defense evaluation necessarily uses an identical set of samples for months. To look at a product’s handling of brand-new malware, we examine each product using 100 new malware-hosting URLs provided by MRG-Effitas, noting what percent of these it blocked. Products get equal credit for preventing all access to the malicious URL and for wiping the malware out during the download.
Some products earn absolutely stellar ratings from the labs that are individual, yet don’t fare too in our hands free tests. In these cases, we defer to the labs, as they bring significantly more resources to their own testing. Want to learn more? You can dig for a detailed description of how we test security applications.
